Ideally, 'configs/common' should also be deprecated, but some tests still

073c32be2c misc: Replace TARGET_ISA with USE_${ISA} variables.
The TARGET_ISA variable would let you select one ISA from a list of
possible ISAs. That has now been replaced with USE_ARM_ISA, USE_X86_ISA,
etc, variables which are boolean on or off. That will allow any number
of ISAs to be enabled or disabled individually. Enabling something other
than exactly one of these will probably prevent you from getting a
working gem5 binary, but those problems are being addressed in other,
parallel change series.

I decided to use the USE_ prefix since it was consistent with most other
on/off variables we have in gem5. One noteable exception is the
BUILD_GPU setting which, you could convincingly argue, is a better
prefix than USE_. Another option would be to use CONFIG_, in
anticipation of using a kconfig style config mechanism in gem5.

It seemed premature to start using a CONFIG_ prefix here, and if we
decide to switch to some other prefix like BUILD_, it should be a
purposeful choice and not something somebody just starts using.

6f843a918b sim,configs: Default m5ops_base to 0 (disabled) on x86.
This is already the default for other platforms. This is most important
when using KVM, where this mechanism is the only way to trigger pseudo
instructions, or in SE mode to also trigger system calls.

a680b98eaf configs: Assign the host gid to the Process.gid in SE configs
Some syscalls (like chown) can make use of the current process group id
(gid) to setup file ownership. If we just provide the default fake gid
([1]) we will encounter some problems when executing the syscall on the
host.

Example (guest) program:

gid_t prc_gid = getgid();
int res = chown(..., prc_gid);

By assigning the host gid to the guest we are sure we can successfully
execute syscalls from the gem5 process

bc52e3d6c9 configs: Fix waiting on remote debugger
Commit 2c75e58cac ("sim,cpu: Move the remote GDB stub
into the workload.") moved "wait_for_remote_gdb" to the
Workload class. That breaks se.py since it continues to
rely on that being a property of BaseCPU. This ensures
that the property is now set via the current Workload
instance instead.

Also, owing to its boolean nature, the argument should
ideally not expect any additional values. Hence, it is
associated with the "store_true" action.

b04bf8f729 configs: fix se.py error when using "--redirects"
Currently, the workload is initialized before host filesystem
redirections take place (i.e. before --redirects is taken into
account).

This change moves the initialization of the workload to the place
where the redirections have taken place.

ca29eef37e configs,tests: use Sequencer port connect methods
This patch updates Ruby configuration scripts to use the functions
defined in the RubySequencer python object to connect to cpu ports.

Only the protocol-agnostic scripts were updated. Scripts that assume
a specific protocol (e.g. configs/example/apu_se.py, gpu tests, etc)
and scripts in which the obj connected to the RubySequencer is not a
BaseCPU (e.g. the tests scripts) were not changed as they require a
non-standard port wireup.

330a5f7bad misc: BaseCPU using ArchMMU instead of ArchDTB/ArchITB

3293926413 sim: Create a Workload object for SE mode.
The workload object is still optional for the sake of compatibility,
even though it probably shouldn't be in the long term. If a simulation
is just a collection of components with nothing in particular running on
it, for instance driven by a traffic generator, should it even have a
System object in the first place?

e037a93eae configs: Add --wait-gdb as option to se.py
I switch between waiting and non-waiting scenario many times per day.
The BaseCPU.wait_for_remote_gdb attribute, introduced in c2baaab0ed,
makes it much less painful by saving many recompiles.
The present commit tries to go a bit further: the se.py script is
under version control, and changing it interferes with smooth git
workflow.

73fdc2eb57 config,arch,cpu,kern,sim: Extract kernel information from System.
Information about what kernel to load and how to load it was built
into the System object and its subclasses. That overloaded the System
object and made it responsible for too many things, and also was
somewhat awkward when working with SE mode which doesn't have a kernel.

This change extracts the kernel and information related to it from the
System object and puts into into a OsKernel or Workload object.
Currently the idea of a "Workload" to run and a kernel are a bit
muddled, an unfortunate carry-over from the original code. It's also an
implication of trying not to make too sweeping of a change, and to
minimize the number of times configs need to change, ie avoiding
creating a "kernel" parameter which would shortly thereafter be
renamed to "workload".

In future changes, the ideas of a kernel and a workload will be
disentangled, and workloads will be expanded to include emulated
operating systems which shephard and contain Process-es for syscall
emulation.

e2656006df configs: Generalize FileSystemConfig for non se.py
This patch updates the FileSystemConfig so it works with more kinds of
config scripts (e.g., the Learning gem5 scripts).

There are 4 main changes:
- Added system as a parameter to the config_filesystem function so the
function can search the system for the number of CPUs instead of relying
on options from Options.py
- Instead of calling redirect_paths everywhere config_filesystem is
used, now it is implicitly called.
- Cleaned up the Ruby scripts a bit to remove redundant calls to
config_filesystem
- Added a config_filesystem call to the Ruby Learning gem5 script
(currently the only Learning gem5 script that requires it).

In the future, I think it would be better to move the config_filesystem
call into simulate.py, probably into the instantiate function. I tried to
use the per-CPU configuration parameters instead of options from
Options.py, but that's not possible until after the SimObject params
have been finalized in instantiate.

54c77aa055 sim-se: add a faux-filesystem
This change introduces the concept of a faux-filesystem.
The faux-filesystem creates a directory structure in m5out
(or whatever output dir the user specifies) where system calls
may be redirected.

This is useful to avoid non-determinism when reading files
with varying path names (e.g., variations from run-to-run if
the simulation is scheduled on a cluster where paths may change).

Also, this changeset allows circumventing host pseudofiles which
have information specific to the host processor (such as cache
hierarchy or processor information). Bypassing host pseudofiles
can be useful when executing runtimes in the absence of an
operating system kernel since runtimes may try to query standard
files (i.e. /proc or /sys) which are not relevant to an
application executing in syscall emulation mode.

fe3e808495 configs: Use absolute import paths
Use absoluate import paths to be Python 3 compatible. This also
imports absolute_import from __future__ to ensure that Python 2.7
behaves the same way as Python 3.

32bbddf236 configs: Fix Python 3 iterator and exec compatibility issues
Python 2.7 used to return lists for operations such as map and range,
this has changed in Python 3. To make the configs Python 3 compliant,
add explicit conversions from iterators to lists where needed, replace
xrange with range, and fix changes to exec syntax.

This change doesn't fix import paths since that might require us to
restructure the configs slightly.

719eb033fe cpu: Replace the fastmem with a new CPU model
The AtomicSimpleCPU used to be able to access memory directly to speed
up simulation if no caches are used. This is fine as long as no
switching between CPU models is required. In order to switch to a new
CPU model that requires caches, we currently need to checkpoint the
system and restore it into a new configuration. The new
'atomic_noncaching' memory mode provides a solution that avoids this
issue since caches are bypassed in this mode. This changeset removes
the old fastmem option from the AtomicSimpleCPU and introduces a new
CPU, NonCachingSimpleCPU, which derives from the AtomicSimpleCPU.

The NonCachingSimpleCPU uses the same mechanism as the AtomicSimpleCPU
used to use when accessing memory in when fastmem was enabled.

This changeset also introduces a new switcheroo test that tests
switching between a NonCachingSimpleCPU and a TimingSimpleCPU with
caches.

215d5e4096 config: Move KVM CPU checking to CpuConfig helper module
Both se.py and fs.py need to check if a CPU is a KVM CPU. This is
somewhat involved since CPUs can be disabled at compile time. Enable
better code reuse by moving it to the CpuConfig module.

6ab6c52b0b mem-ruby: Support atomic_noncaching acceses in ruby
Ruby has no support for atomic_noncaching accesses, which prevents using
it with kvm-cpu. This patch fixes this by directly forwarding atomic
requests from the ruby port/sequencer to the corresponding directory
based on the destination address of the packet.

355b2ee8f0 configs,sim-se: fix se.py multi-cpu multi-cmd issue
Assign different pids to the different commands specified with the "--cmd"
flag to configs/example/se.py

Without this change, the following command line triggers
a "fatal: _pid 100 is already used" error:

3886c4a8f2 syscall_emul: [patch 5/22] remove LiveProcess class and use Process instead
The EIOProcess class was removed recently and it was the only other class
which derived from Process. Since every Process invocation is also a
LiveProcess invocation, it makes sense to simplify the organization by
combining the fields from LiveProcess into Process.

41beacce08 sim, kvm: make KvmVM a System parameter
A KVM VM is typically a child of the System object already, but for
solving future issues with configuration graph resolution, the most
logical way to keep track of this object is for it to be an actual
parameter of the System object.

2f5262eb67 config: Make configs/common a Python package
Continue along the same line as the recent patch that made the
Ruby-related config scripts Python packages and make also the
configs/common directory a package.

All affected config scripts are updated (hopefully).

Note that this change makes it apparent that the current organisation
and naming of the config directory and its subdirectories is rather
chaotic. We mix scripts that are directly invoked with scripts that
merely contain convenience functions. While it is not addressed in
this patch we should follow up with a re-organisation of the
config structure, and renaming of some of the packages.

68fdccb30b ruby: Fix regressions and make Ruby configs Python packages
This patch moves the addition of network options into the Ruby module
to avoid the regressions all having to add it explicitly. Doing this
exposes an issue in our current config system though, namely the fact
that addtoPath is relative to the Python script being executed. Since
both example and regression scripts use the Ruby module we would end
up with two different (relative) paths being added. Instead we take a
first step at turning the config modules into Python packages, simply
by adding a __init__.py in the configs/ruby, configs/topologies and
configs/network subdirectories.

As a result, we can now add the top-level configs directory to the
Python search path, and then use the package names in the various
modules. The example scripts are also updated, and the messy
path-deducing variations in the scripts are unified.

9bd5051b60 config: Enable elastic trace capture and replay in se/fs
This patch adds changes to the configuration scripts to support elastic
tracing and replay.

The patch adds a command line option to enable elastic tracing in SE mode
and FS mode. When enabled the Elastic Trace cpu probe is attached to O3CPU
and a few O3 CPU parameters are tuned. The Elastic Trace probe writes out
both instruction fetch and data dependency traces. The patch also enables
configuring the TraceCPU to replay traces using the SE and FS script.

The replay run is designed to resume from checkpoint using atomic cpu to
restore state keeping it consistent with FS run flow. It then switches to
TraceCPU to replay the input traces.

582a0148b4 config,cpu: Add SMT support to Atomic and Timing CPUs
Adds SMT support to the "simple" CPU models so that they can be
used with other SMT-supported CPUs. Example usage: this enables
the TimingSimpleCPU to be used to warmup caches before swapping to
detailed mode with the in-order or out-of-order based CPU models.

36dc93a5fa mem: Move crossbar default latencies to subclasses
This patch introduces a few subclasses to the CoherentXBar and
NoncoherentXBar to distinguish the different uses in the system. We
use the crossbar in a wide range of places: interfacing cores to the
L2, as a system interconnect, connecting I/O and peripherals,
etc. Needless to say, these crossbars have very different performance,
and the clock frequency alone is not enough to distinguish these
scenarios.

Instead of trying to capture every possible case, this patch
introduces dedicated subclasses for the three primary use-cases:
L2XBar, SystemXBar and IOXbar. More can be added if needed, and the
defaults can be overridden.

times.  This should be done only once.  In se.py, the the option use_map
was being set which no longer exists.

3022d463fb ruby: interface with classic memory controller
This patch is the final in the series.  The whole series and this patch in
particular were written with the aim of interfacing ruby's directory controller
with the memory controller in the classic memory system.  This is being done
since ruby's memory controller has not being kept up to date with the changes
going on in DRAMs.  Classic's memory controller is more up to date and
supports multiple different types of DRAM.  This also brings classic and
ruby ever more close.  The patch also changes ruby's memory controller to
expose the same interface.
